OWL Stewardship Day with the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA)

We are delighted to partner with MITA again this year to offer an OWL Stewardship Day on a local island! Volunteers will work together using hand tools to de-bark locally harvested spruce poles that will become the framework for traditional tent structures supporting future community gatherings and youth programming on the island. It’s a chance to spend a meaningful day outdoors, learn practical skills, connect with others, and help build something lasting in an extraordinary natural setting.
Meeting Place: Jonesport Town Dock
Difficulty: Moderate. Participants should feel comfortable climbing in and out of small skiffs, and using hand tools (draw knives, axes – skills teaching will be provided!)
Required Gear
- PFD: If you do not have a USCG-approved life jacket, reach out to Lizzie at lizzie@whrl.org as MITA has life jackets that can be borrowed.
- Clothing: Even if it is sunny, it can get cool and wet on the water! Make sure to bring sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and non-cotton layers for the boat ride. Depending on the weather, we may also recommend rain gear (top & bottom).Work Gloves (MITA has some they can provide, but if you have a personal pair you prefer, please bring them!)
- Footwear: Hiking boots, sneakers, or rubber rain boots are all appropriate for this outing. You will be climbing in and out of a skiff, so plan for the possibility of getting your feet wet! If you don’t have waterproof shoes, consider bringing a second pair of shoes for getting in and out of the boat.
- Lunch and drinking water
- Small backpack for keeping your lunch/water/supplies with you on the island.
Encouraged Gear (but not required)
- Insect repellent for ticks
