SUMMARY:Exploring Wellness through Mindfulness with Britta Sunde
DESCRIPTION:This program is open to all. \nJoin Britta Sunde for a wellness course that explores the importance of mindfulness and its crucial role in our physical and mental health. Within all of us lies the wisdom to heal and to be well. Oftentimes\, the reason that we don’t heal or feel our best is that we don’t know how to get out of our own way. Unhealthy habits\, negative thought patterns\, or simply being unaware can all be hindrances that we create for ourselves! \nBritta will lead a discussion of mindful eating\, nutrition\, self-care practices\, stress management techniques\, and more. You can expect to come away with concrete ideas for taking better care of yourself and integrating mindfulness into your daily life. You will learn practical tools to improve and protect your health\, and you will explore how to listen and respect the subtle signals our bodies and minds are so often sending us – signs that something is out of balance and needs attention\, asking us to make changes such as slowing down and making time to take better care of ourselves – BEFORE we become ill. \nThis class is designed for anyone who would like to improve their overall well-being or explore personal growth through self-awareness practices. Britta will incorporate gentle stretching into this program\, so come prepared for some light movement. This is a welcoming and judgment-free zone. \nPlease plan to bring the following with you to class: \n\nBlanket\nComfortable clothes\nYoga mat\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Britta Sunde is dedicated to improving her patients’ wellness journeys in Downeast Maine. SUMMARY:Lessons in Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie GarmusLeader: Pat OlsenWednesdays\, 6-7:30 – (3/11\, 3/18\, 3/25)Tuesdays\, 3:00-4:30 – (3/10\, 3/17\, 3/24) \nChemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact\, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans\, the lonely\, brilliant\, Nobel–prize–nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.  \nBut like science\, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother\, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows\, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out\, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.   \nLaugh-out-loud funny\, shrewdly observant\, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters\, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist. \nRegistration opens February 1st. \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Groups are open to anyone age 18 or older for whom "woman" is a meaningful identifier or lived experience. \nOur book discussion group meets for three sessions. SUMMARY:Chair Yoga with Geri Valentine Begins - Winter Session 2
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesdays\, beginning February 18th (5 sessions)Time: 4:00-5:00 pmCost: $10 per session ($50 paid in advance) \nChair yoga allows us to enjoy yoga benefits while sitting securely in a firm chair.  We still have to do the work\, but we are seated in a chair or standing next to it\, using our hand for support.  This makes the practice available to those of us who can’t easily get up and down from the floor\,  have had knee or hip replacements\,  suffer from dizziness\, and struggle with balance — lots of us! \nWith practice\, our bodies become stronger and more flexible. Our breathing slows and deepens\, our postural alignment improves\, and we begin to cultivate an inner field of quiet and self-compassion. These benefits bring vitality to our systems and a feeling of being at home in our bodies. \nChairs are provided. Please wear comfortable clothing\, in layers\, for warm and cool conditions. Elastic waistbands are essential to prevent breath obstruction. Sneakers are good\, and shoes may stay on during practice. If you have yoga blocks\, please bring them.  No mat is needed. \nGeri Valentine is the instructor for this series. She is certified in both Yin and Kripalu Yoga\, forms of Hatha Yoga. She has offered Yoga through WHRL for 18 years. SUMMARY:Chair Yoga with Geri Valentine Begins - Winter Session
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesdays\, beginning January 14th (5 sessions)Time: 4:00-5:00 pmCost: $10 per session ($50 paid in advance) \nChair yoga allows us to enjoy yoga benefits while sitting securely in a firm chair. This Chair Yoga session is a modified version of Hatha. \nFor questions\, contact Geri Valentine at 207-598-5355. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n 2026 Winter Chair Yoga with Geri Valentine\n \n Chair Yoga - Winter SessionThis session is full. SUMMARY:Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine MayLeader: Alison BeedyEvenings: Wednesdays\, 6-7:30 – (1/14\, 1/21\, 1/28Afternoons: Thursdays\, 3:00-4:30 – (1/15\, 1/22\, 1/29) \nFrom the author of the New York Times bestseller Enchantment: Awakening Wonder in an Anxious Age\, this is an intimate\, revelatory exploration of the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. \nSometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness\, the death of a loved one\, a break up\, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May\, her husband fell ill\, her son stopped attending school\, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time\, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. \nA moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature\, mythology\, and the natural world\, May’s story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation\, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath\, swimming in icy waters\, and sailing arctic seas. \nUltimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat\, joy in the hushed beauty of winter\, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical\, not linear. A secular mystic\, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season. \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Groups are open to anyone age 18 or older for whom "woman" is a meaningful identifier or lived experience. \nOur book discussion group meets for three sessions. SUMMARY:Winter Sowing
DESCRIPTION:Gardening in Maine can begin after the winter solstice…Truly! Winter Sowing is a popular method of germinating vegetable and flower seeds. Winter Sowing saves money\, uses recycled materials\, and is a fun winter pastime. I’ve had great success\, Winter Sowing many annuals and perennials\, and the result has been some of the strongest and hardiest seedlings I’ve ever grown. During the workshop\, you will learn step by step how to create your very own Winter garden. You will take home mini greenhouses made from gallon milk jugs\, which can then remain outside until their perfect germination conditions arrive. It’s amazing! Jacquie Leighton lives in Milbridge in an old farmhouse at the head of Pigeon Hill Bay. For nearly all her life\, she has had her hands in soil. Her earliest memories are of her mother’s marigold gardens\, and they are still her favorite\, winter-sown (deer-resistant). She is retired from teaching and enjoys learning new ways of creating beautiful plantings. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n 2026-January: IEM - Winter Sowing\n \n Winter SowingThis session is full.
