SUMMARY:Estate Planning 101 with Rebecca Sargent
DESCRIPTION:This program is a two-part series occurring on October 8th and 15th. \nWhat is estate planning\, and why is it important? It’s not about expecting the worst\, but about putting thoughtful plans in place so your wishes are respected. Estate planning covers both “where will my assets go when I’m gone” and “who will help me if I am incapacitated.” Join Rebecca Sargent of Jones\, Kuriloff & Sargent\, LLC\, for a two-night presentation covering the basic legal documents every adult should have in place.   Some documents or tasks are things you can do yourself; others should be done formally.  We will talk about common scenarios: blended families\, land-rich and cash-poor\, the effect of how you title accounts or real estate\, and loved ones with special needs.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n More about the facilitator: \nPrior to establishing her own law practice in estate planning\, probate\, trust administration\, corporate matters\, and real estate\, Rebecca Sargent was Senior Vice President & Senior Trust Officer at Union Trust Company (now Camden National Bank) from 1994 to 2008. Before that\, she practiced law at Loughlin & Wade in Portsmouth\, NH. She merged her business with the practices of Jeffrey Jones and Roberta Kuriloff in 2013\, thus forming Jones\, Kuriloff & Sargent\, LLC. \nRebecca believes in giving back to her community\, so she regularly volunteers her time and was named the Ellsworth Chamber’s Citizen of the Year in 2024.  Recent non-profit involvement includes: Member EBDC Board (Ellsworth Business Development Corporation); Member Frenchman Bay Conservancy Board; Member HCTC Study Committee; Trustee\, Lawyer’s Fund for Client Protection; Northern Light Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Capital Campaign Committee; Member Steering Committee\, Ellsworth Rotary Auction; Member\, Downeast Family YMCA Board; Member\, Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce Board.  In addition\, Rebecca has been an instructor in various estate planning and investment topics for local organizations. \nAn Ellsworth native\, Rebecca’s passions include travel and golf. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n \n \n Estate Planning 101 with Rebecca Sargent\n \n CommentsThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Estate Planning 101 with Rebecca Sargent10 seats available.\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n Waitlist(Required)\n \n I wish to be signed up for the waitlist.\n Your InformationName(Required)Space is limited - register ONLY one person at a time. \n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Phone(Required)Mailing Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n City\n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n Is there anything else we should know? For those with experience\, we’ll explore advanced techniques such as layering multiple colors\, combining stamped imagery\, and experimenting with collage using the Chinè-collé method. \nAll materials are provided—including carving tools\, Speedy-Carve blocks\, printing ink pads\, sketching and printing paper\, and a selection of colorful tissue papers—so you can focus fully on making art.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Norma Vela  \nNorma began her artistic journey at age six\, copying fashion illustrations from the daily newspaper—back when fashion was drawn by hand and newspapers landed on doorsteps each morning. After a 30-year career writing for television\, she returned to her first love: art. \nA self-described magpie when it comes to collecting art supplies\, Norma works in watercolor\, gouache\, acrylic brush markers\, pattern design\, carved stamps\, and digital tools like Procreate and Adobe Illustrator. Her practice is grounded in curiosity and creative confidence\, always open to experimentation—and the occasional misstep. \nIn 2022\, she opened TetherMade\, a small art and gift shop in Cherryfield\, Maine\, showcasing her creations alongside those of fellow Maine artists. Norma is a member of the Rising Tides Collective\, teaches workshops with Schoodic Arts for All\, and believes art should be welcoming\, not intimidating—especially for beginners.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n The Joy of Carving Stamps\n \n The Joy of Carving Stamps with Norma Vela9 spots available.\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n Your InformationName(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Phone Number(Required)Email(Required)\n \n Mailing Address \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n City\n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n Do you have any serious allergies to food?(Required)\n \n \n No\n \n \n \n Yes\n What are you allergic to and is it life-threatening?Do you have any dietary restrictions? Is there anything else we should know? SUMMARY:Crochet 101 + Granny Squares
DESCRIPTION:Crochet 101 + Granny Squares offers a fun\, relaxed environment where beginners can learn the basics of crochet and then take it up a notch by creating Granny Squares. If you already know the fundamentals\, you’re welcome to jump right into making granny squares! These versatile squares offer endless creative possibilities and are a great way to use up leftover yarn. \nJoin us Saturday\, September 26th\, from 1–4 PM at the WHRL Office. WHRL provides a welcoming space to start crafting\, build skills\, and connect with others in the community. \nThis workshop is open not only to women\, but to everyone in the community—ages 12 and up (a guardian is required if the participant is under the age of 16). Registration is required. \nYou may recognize Kelly from WHRL\, where she serves as our Communications Coordinator\, managing social media and newsletter publications. In her free time\, Kelly enjoys spending time at home with her husband\, hiking\, and various crafts\, including crocheting. She learned to crochet at age 19 from a kind\, grandmotherly friend and has practiced the craft on and off over the years. Kelly is excited to share her love of crochet and show others that\, with step-by-step guidance and a little practice\, anyone can learn to crochet! \nRegistration opens July 1st.

SUMMARY:Narraguagus Paddle\, Cherryfield
DESCRIPTION:This mellow paddling outing offers opportunities to learn canoeing skills and see a variety of wildlife\, including beavers\, river otters\, muskrats\, a variety of birds\, and maybe\, if we’re really lucky\, a moose or bear! We will meet in Cherryfield and paddle upstream\, so the way back will be even easier. This is a flatwater paddling experience\, and the current on this stretch of the river is usually quite minimal—you’ll hardly notice you’re paddling upstream. In OWL outings\, frequent stops are built into the program to discuss elements of the natural world that we learn about on the way. The pace is always determined by the needs and desires of the group\, with a primary goal of going slowly to enhance our connection with nature and each other. \nCanoes\, paddles\, and life jackets available to the first 6 people who need them; otherwise\, BYO boat. \nOWL Outings are led by Registered Maine Guides at Maine Outdoor School who all hold a minimum of a Wilderness First Aid certification. To learn more about MOS’s guides\, visit https://www.maineoutdoorschool.org/staff. \nSpace is limited\, and registration is required. Registration opens on August 17.

SUMMARY:The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
DESCRIPTION:The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann ShafferLeader: Pat OlsenWednesdays\, 6-7:30 – (9/2\, 9/9\, 9/16)Tuesdays\, 3:00-4:30 – (9/1\, 9/8\, 9/15) \n“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War\, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met\, a native of the island of Guernsey\, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb. . . . \nAs Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters\, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming\, funny\, deeply human cast of characters\, from pig farmers to phrenologists\, literature lovers all. \nJuliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members\, learning about their island\, their taste in books\, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories\, she sets sail for Guernsey\, and what she finds will change her forever. \nWritten with warmth and humor as a series of letters\, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises and of finding connection in the most surprising ways. \nRegistration opens August 1st.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Groups are open to anyone age 18 or older for whom "woman" is a meaningful identifier or lived experience. \nOur book discussion group meets for three sessions. Please register only if you can commit to attending all sessions.

SUMMARY:Drawing from Observation: Expressive Mark-Making in Response to Seeing with Nina Jerome
DESCRIPTION:This workshop centers on the art of SEEING and paring down the landscape to its essential visual elements. In the morning session\, we’ll explore techniques for creating visual space in drawing. Through a series of short exercises using pencils\, charcoal\, and erasers\, participants will be encouraged to observe closely and use line\, shape\, and value to represent landscape space\, with individuals discovering parts of the landscape that interest them. Weather permitting\, we will work outside\, looking at both shallow and deep spaces for compositional possibilities. After lunch\, we’ll continue with a few brief exercises\, then move into a more sustained exercise using value contrast on a toned page\, allowing the morning drawings to guide us toward dynamic compositions. At the end of both the morning and afternoon sessions\, we’ll review work and hold group discussions\, offering opportunities for questions and sharing. The focus will remain on seeing visual elements and understanding the process of developing ideas\, rather than on making completed\, finished works. \nAll materials and lunch will be provided. Space is limited; register now.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Retreat Leader: Nina Jerome\nA long-time resident of Maine\, Nina Jerome finds inspiration for her work in both natural and constructed environments\, drawing and painting in series that examine visual variations of place. For her\, the painting process conveys her personal direction through the land as she witnesses its light\, movement\, and changes. \nNina spends the warmer months in coastal Maine\, a rich visual resource with its undeveloped shoreline and wide-ranging tidal fluctuations. She has also explored sense-of-place in other Maine areas\, relating her landscape interest to her personal experience. SUMMARY:OWL Stewardship Day with the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to partner with MITA again this year to offer an OWL Stewardship Day on a local island!  Volunteers will work together using hand tools to de-bark locally harvested spruce poles that will become the framework for traditional tent structures supporting future community gatherings and youth programming on the island. It’s a chance to spend a meaningful day outdoors\, learn practical skills\, connect with others\, and help build something lasting in an extraordinary natural setting. \nMeeting Place: Jonesport Town Dock \nDifficulty: Moderate. Participants should feel comfortable climbing in and out of small skiffs\, and using hand tools (draw knives\, axes – skills teaching will be provided!) \nRequired Gear \n\nPFD: If you do not have a USCG-approved life jacket\, reach out to Lizzie at lizzie@whrl.org as MITA has life jackets that can be borrowed.\nClothing: Even if it is sunny\, it can get cool and wet on the water! Make sure to bring sunglasses\, a hat\, sunscreen\, and non-cotton layers for the boat ride. Depending on the weather\, we may also recommend rain gear (top & bottom).Work Gloves (MITA has some they can provide\, but if you have a personal pair you prefer\, please bring them!)\nFootwear: Hiking boots\, sneakers\, or rubber rain boots are all appropriate for this outing. You will be climbing in and out of a skiff\, so plan for the possibility of getting your feet wet! If you don’t have waterproof shoes\, consider bringing a second pair of shoes for getting in and out of the boat.\nLunch and drinking water\nSmall backpack for keeping your lunch/water/supplies with you on the island.\n\nEncouraged Gear (but not required) \n\nInsect repellent for ticks\n\n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Mending Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to learn how to mend your clothes? Do you have a pile of clothes you love that need a little TLC before you can wear them again? Are you a seasoned mender looking to meet and connect with others? There is a place for you at WHRL’s Mending Cafe! Share your favorite technique for putting a patch on your jeans\, sewing on a button\, darning your knitwear\, and more! Some repairs may benefit from the use of a sewing machine; we will always have at least one available. \nWe welcome all skill levels to this program. Although this will not be a class\, there will be menders who can help you brainstorm ideas for your repairs. We will have some tools and materials available\, but we recommend bringing your favorite sewing notions from home. We will have plenty of fabric scraps\, embroidery floss\, yarn\, and iron for pressing. We will also have some of our favorite books on mending techniques available for in-class use and inspiration! \nPlease note that this program will take place monthly on the second Tuesday of each month on a drop-in basis.

SUMMARY:Twilight Crawl
DESCRIPTION:During this twilight crawl\, we’ll be looking for animals that are most active during dawn and dusk. This mellow hike will focus on observing the signs of wildlife that love this cooler time of day during summer. In OWL outings\, frequent stops are built into the program to discuss elements of the natural world that we learn about on the way. The pace is always determined by the needs and desires of the group with a primary goal of going slow to enhance our connection with nature and each other. Bring comfortable close-toed shoes for walking in\, like sneakers or hiking boots\, and a backpack for extra layers\, water\, and snacks. This will be a moderate*\, short hike with minimal elevation change over mostly flat terrain. More information about the trail here (we don’t do the full 1.5-mile lollipop trail). \nOWL Outings are led by Registered Maine Guides at Maine Outdoor School who all hold a minimum of a Wilderness First Aid certification. To learn more about MOS’s guides\, visit https://www.maineoutdoorschool.org/staff. \n*To determine the difficulty level of outings\, we use Maine TrailFinder’s difficulty rating system. For more detailed information about these difficulty levels\, including visual examples\, explore the rating system here. \nGear Library \nWHRL and MOS have a gear collection for OWL outings. Please reach out directly to Lizzie at 413-717-7827 or by email at lizzie@whrl.org if you are interested in using any of the items below. Use is first-come\, first-served. Need something that you don’t see on the list below? Reach out! \nAvailable Gear \n\nTrekking poles (6 sets)\nLayers: rain ponchos\n\nSpace is limited\, and registration is required. SUMMARY:Nature Inspired Art–a FREE Children’s Art Camp
DESCRIPTION:This year’s “Nature-Inspired Art Camp” is an opportunity for kids to connect to their natural environment. We will explore native and non-native plants\, birds\, and other creatures within the park. We will sharpen our artistic skills through a variety of exercises\, techniques\, and drawing and painting media. We hope this camp inspires a love for both nature and art as they relate to our own lives. \nThis free program will run four days\, July 20-23\, from 10am to Noon at Milbridge Commons Wellness Park. If there is inclement weather\, we’ll meet in WHRL’s Thankful Room. Open to children ages 9-14. \nJanie Snider\, Camp Leader\nJanie has been teaching art classes for nearly 30 years. Her work is inspired by the beauty of nature and Maine’s landscapes. Janie works primarily in watercolor and acrylics but loves playing with other media. She will offer individual guidance and share some of her own thoughts and techniques. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n Nature Inspired Art–a FREE Children’s Art Camp\n \n CommentsThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Nature Inspired Art–a FREE Children’s Art Camp10 spots available.\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n Waitlist(Required)\n \n I wish to be signed up for the Waitlist\n Child InformationChild's Name(Required)Space is limited - register ONLY one person at a time. \n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Child's Age in June(Required)This program is open to children ages 9-14.Please enter a number from 9 to 14.Parent or Guardian InformationParent or Guardian Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Phone(Required)Mailing Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n City\n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n Is there anything else we should know? SUMMARY:Entomology 101 (Bugs)\, Milbridge Commons
DESCRIPTION:Flower and vegetable gardens are the perfect place to build your insect identification skills. Optional sitting or standing activities will help you connect with the beauty and mystery of the insect world\, learn to categorize them\, and consider how humans could possibly survive without them! This program is low-movement\, and you can enjoy it seated or standing. Wheelchairs welcome! For this outing\, you will need to move from your car in the parking lot to the grassy park area of the Milbridge Commons Wellness Park. The park is ringed by a 6′-wide trail with a deep gravel base topped with stone dust\, which makes it easier on the joints than pavement. For people who use wheelchairs\, Maine Trail Finder’s Accessibility Ambassador\, Enock Glidden\, has created a rating system in Wheelies. This outing qualifies as “Wheelie Easy.” See here for more information. For those who would like to move around more\, you will also have the opportunity to do so. Wear clothing and footwear to keep you warm and dry during this slower-paced program\, and a lawn chair if you’d prefer not to sit on a stone bench or the ground. Please reach out to Lizzie at 413-717-7827 with any further questions. \nOWL Outings are led by Registered Maine Guides at Maine Outdoor School who all hold a minimum of a Wilderness First Aid certification. To learn more about MOS’s guides\, visit https://www.maineoutdoorschool.org/staff. Registration opens on June 15.

SUMMARY:Bear's Den Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Geri Valentine and Donna Kausen are self-reliant homestead gardeners who have been growing vegetables organically for seasonal eating and Winter storage for over 40 years. Geri and Donna demonstrate the virtues of mindfulness and Earth-care in how they tend the soil. There is no petroleum\, plastic\, or packaging in this garden. All work is done by hand with a spade and a fork; they use only locally gathered soil amendments such as leaves\, seaweed\, and manure\, and they save their own seeds when practical. Come and be inspired by this unique off-grid homestead and gardens\, and the women who created them. \nOpen to families and well-supervised children of all ages. This program is free\, but pre-registration is required. Registration opens May 1st.  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n 2026-June: IEM - Bear's Den Garden Tour\n \n Bear's Den Garden Tour3 seats available.\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n Waitlist(Required)\n \n I wish to be signed up for the Waitlist\n Your InformationName(Required)Space is limited - register ONLY one person at a time. \n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Phone(Required)Mailing Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n City\n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n Do you require English/Spanish translation for this workshop?(Required)\n \n \n No\n \n \n \n Yes\, I require translation services.\n Translation Services(Required)You indicated that you require English/Spanish translation. SUMMARY:Long Pond Paddle
DESCRIPTION:This mellow paddling outing\, departing from the Black Woods Road just west of Cherryfield\, offers the opportunity to develop canoeing skills and observe the unique insects and plants that call this spring-fed pond home in late spring. This is a flatwater paddling experience where we can choose how far we want to paddle and tack on an optional short walk from a beach to another pond if we choose. In OWL outings\, frequent stops are built into the program to discuss elements of the natural world that we learn about on the way. The pace is always determined by the needs and desires of the group\, with a primary goal of going slow to enhance our connection with nature and each other. \nCanoes\, paddles\, and life jackets available to the first 6 people who need them; otherwise\, BYO boat! In addition to canoes and kayaks\, we welcome paddleboards on this outing\, though note that they tend to go much slower than canoes and kayaks. Helpers are available to assist with unloading/loading your gear at the boat launch; you will not have to unload by yourself. Registration opens on May 18. \n \n Click here to Register
