SUMMARY:The Beekeeper's Apprentice
DESCRIPTION:The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie KingLeader: Pat OlsenEvenings: Wednesdays\, 6-7:30 – (2/11\, 2/18\, 2/25)Afternoons: Tuesdays\, 3:00-4:30 – (2/10\, 2/17\, 2/24) \nIn 1915\, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old\, gawky\, egotistical\, and recently orphaned\, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage\, this very modern\, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. They are soon called to Wales to help Scotland Yard find the kidnapped daughter of an American senator\, a case of international significance with clues that dip deep into Holmes’s past. Full of brilliant deduction\, disguises\, and danger\, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice\, the first book of the Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries\, is “remarkably beguiling” (The Boston Globe). \nRegistration opens January 1st. \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Groups are open to anyone age 18 or older for whom "woman" is a meaningful identifier or lived experience. \nOur book discussion group meets for three sessions. SUMMARY:Chair Yoga with Geri Valentine Begins - Winter Session
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesdays\, beginning January 14th (5 sessions)Time: 4:00-5:00 pmCost: $10 per session ($50 paid in advance) \nChair yoga allows us to enjoy yoga benefits while sitting securely in a firm chair.  We still have to do the work\, but we are seated in a chair or standing next to it\, using our hand for support.  This makes the practice available to those of us who can’t easily get up and down from the floor\,  have had knee or hip replacements\,  suffer from dizziness\, and struggle with balance — lots of us! \nWith practice\, our bodies become stronger and more flexible. Our breathing slows and deepens\, our postural alignment improves\, and we begin to cultivate an inner field of quiet and self-compassion. These benefits bring vitality to our systems and a feeling of being at home in our bodies. \nChairs are provided. Please wear comfortable clothing\, in layers\, for warm and cool conditions. Elastic waistbands are essential to prevent breath obstruction. Sneakers are good\, and shoes may stay on during practice. If you have yoga blocks\, please bring them.  No mat is needed. \nGeri Valentine is the instructor for this series. She is certified in both Yin and Kripalu Yoga\, forms of Hatha Yoga. She has offered Yoga through WHRL for 18 years. This Chair Yoga session is a modified version of Hatha. \nFor questions\, contact Geri Valentine at 207-598-5355. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n 2026 Winter Chair Yoga with Geri Valentine\n \n Chair Yoga - Winter SessionThis session is full. SUMMARY:Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine MayLeader: Alison BeedyEvenings: Wednesdays\, 6-7:30 – (1/14\, 1/21\, 1/28Afternoons: Thursdays\, 3:00-4:30 – (1/15\, 1/22\, 1/29) \nFrom the author of the New York Times bestseller Enchantment: Awakening Wonder in an Anxious Age\, this is an intimate\, revelatory exploration of the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. \nSometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness\, the death of a loved one\, a break up\, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May\, her husband fell ill\, her son stopped attending school\, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time\, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. \nA moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature\, mythology\, and the natural world\, May’s story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation\, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath\, swimming in icy waters\, and sailing arctic seas. \nUltimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat\, joy in the hushed beauty of winter\, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical\, not linear. A secular mystic\, May forms a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season. \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Groups are open to anyone age 18 or older for whom "woman" is a meaningful identifier or lived experience. \nOur book discussion group meets for three sessions. SUMMARY:Expressive Writing Series Begins
DESCRIPTION:“I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” ~ Flannery O’Connor \n \n \n \n \n \n This group meets every other Monday\, January 12th to March 23rd\, 5:30-7:00 PMIt is open not just for women\, but for everyone in the community.\nThe long darkness of winter can be a welcome time for turning inward; for listening to the songs of our souls and strengthening the deeper parts of ourselves that are so easily neglected during the brighter seasons. Writing can facilitate that process\, especially when it is practiced regularly for expression and contemplation. The practice of free-writing has been shown by science—and by 100+ generations of human experience—to nurture mental and physical health. The same is true for spending time together\, sharing\, and learning in meaningful ways. \nThis group will meet on six winter nights – from January through March – to explore and play with various creative approaches to expressive writing and journaling. \n\nThe main goal of these writing practices will be to increase our access to our true selves by quieting or eluding our inner editors and critics.\nThe first few sessions will be guided\, while the structure of later sessions could evolve as the group progresses.\nSharing your writing will be optional. Being part of a consistent group does make it easier to connect and to share. Inspiration happens that way.\nWriting by hand – rather than on a keyboard – is strongly encouraged.\nBYO snacks\, blankets\, favorite old hoodie… whatever feels comfortable!\n\nWhether you already have a writing practice or haven’t written since you were forced to do so in school\, this group should be rewarding for you. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Rebecca Hunter lives in Sullivan and works as a psychotherapist. When not talking with clients or roaming the outdoors by foot\, ski\, and paddle\, she is usually hanging out with her dogs\, compulsively gardening\, maintaining her old house\, woods trails\, and woodlot\, studying depth psychology\, writing\, making random art\, cooking\, and talking with friends and family (and dogs). \nRebecca has either facilitated or participated in several expressive writing groups over the last 20 years. SUMMARY:Winter Sowing
DESCRIPTION:Gardening in Maine can begin after the winter solstice…Truly! Winter Sowing is a popular method of germinating vegetable and flower seeds. Winter Sowing saves money\, uses recycled materials\, and is a fun winter pastime. I’ve had great success\, Winter Sowing many annuals and perennials\, and the result has been some of the strongest and hardiest seedlings I’ve ever grown. During the workshop\, you will learn step by step how to create your very own Winter garden. You will take home mini greenhouses made from gallon milk jugs\, which can then remain outside until their perfect germination conditions arrive. It’s amazing! Jacquie Leighton lives in Milbridge in an old farmhouse at the head of Pigeon Hill Bay. For nearly all her life\, she has had her hands in soil. Her earliest memories are of her mother’s marigold gardens\, and they are still her favorite\, winter-sown (deer-resistant). She is retired from teaching and enjoys learning new ways of creating beautiful plantings. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n 2026-January: IEM - Winter Sowing\n \n Winter SowingThis session is full. SUMMARY:Wok this Way: Asian Flavors for Beginners with Nicole French
DESCRIPTION:The inspiration for this class comes from Nicole’s early adventures in the kitchen\, as asian-inspired dishes were the first meals she attempted after leaving the comfort of her mother’s home-cooked food. Try this hands-on class if you’re ready to chop\, shred\, sizzle\, and steam your way to a vibrant\, satisfying meal. We will prepare recipes from Chinese and Japanese traditions that use sweet\, spicy\, salty\, and pungent flavors to create that irresistible umami. Gather after cooking to enjoy the dishes and then head home with fresh ideas to share at your next family gathering or themed-menu night. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n 2026 January Harvest Table - Wok This Way\n \n CompanyThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Wok This WayThis session is full. SUMMARY:Mending Cafe
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to learn how to mend your clothes? Do you have a pile of clothes you love that need a little TLC before you can wear them again? Are you a seasoned mender looking to meet and connect with others? There is a place for you at WHRL’s Mending Cafe! Share your favorite technique for putting a patch on your jeans\, sewing on a button\, darning your knitwear\, and more! Some repairs may benefit from the use of a sewing machine; we will always have at least one available. \nWe welcome all skill levels to this program. Although this will not be a class\, there will be menders who can help you brainstorm ideas for your repairs. We will have some tools and materials available\, but we recommend bringing your favorite sewing notions from home. We will have plenty of fabric scraps\, embroidery floss\, yarn\, and iron for pressing. We will also have some of our favorite books on mending techniques available for in-class use and inspiration! \nPlease note that this program will take place monthly on the second Tuesday of each month on a drop-in basis.
