Family Garden Workshop: Growing with Children (a workshop for kids and their grown-ups)

April 20 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Let’s make gardening fun! Would you like to spark an interest in gardening in a child you know? Or do you know a child who is already curious about plants or gardening and you’re looking for new ideas to expand their interest?

Join us for this 2-hour adventure into making gardening fun for children of all ages. In the first hour, we will have an overview of kids and gardens and why they are made for each other, along with some low-cost ideas that can help kids (and grown-ups) get started. We’ll explore indoor, outdoor, big and small gardens for children. In the second hour, we will look at how plants and people are the same, and we’ll have a chance to get our hands on some soil and some seeds and have fun making a grass-head person to bring home and grow.

Elin MacKinnon, LCSW, a clinical consultant with the Community Caring Collaborative (CCC), has worked for 40 years with children and families in agency settings and social work private practice. In the 1980s, she began to incorporate plants and garden activities into her clinical work. For over 20 years, she taught courses in the University of Maine’s School of Social Work in Orono, including developing and teaching courses focused on the healing power of plants and the arts in therapy. She planted her first garden when she was five and still plants a garden every year. This program is offered in collaboration with the Community Caring Collaborative.

This program is free, but prior registration is required!
