Women’s Creative Art Journaling with Carol Shutt

September 28 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$150.00

Spend a day of learning and exploring with other creative women at the historic summer home of artist John Marin.

You will start with a new sketchbook and a variety of materials to begin an art journal of reflection, exploration, and creativity. This workshop is taught by artist Carol Shutt, who will share various techniques and creative entry points for visual journaling and personal expression. There will be opportunities for creative writing, beach-combing, and sharing & collaborating with each other throughout the day.

Materials Included. You are invited to bring any papers, imagery, photos and art materials you have on hand and might want to use in the workshop.

Our Morning:

  • Coffee and conversation
  • Carol shares her work and art journal examples to give participants an idea of different possibilities, entry points and approaches.
  • Do some collage work with colored and patterned papers in order to explore our ideas and learn about the elements of art and design.
  • A brief introduction to Surrealism and how this style of art can add personal expression, meaning, and ideas to your collage work.
  • A short collaborative creative writing exercise to learn how to introduce text (words and phrases) into your art journaling and collages.

Lunch followed by a Nature Walk (beachcombing, some collecting, and a few photos)

Our Afternoon:

  • We’ll begin with a series of simple drawing exercises. (As with every activity in this workshop, these exercises are designed for all participant experience levels, from practicing artists to those who have seldom drawn before.)
  • Final group and independent work time: Putting your ideas together, exploring what you’ve learned, trying new techniques, starting new sketchbook pages, and adding to and finishing work you’ve started.
  • Share and discuss our work and process together.

Lunch is included.

About Carol Shutt

Carol Shutt is a mixed-media artist living and working on Mount Desert Island. She came to Maine in the late 1970s after earning a degree in Fine Arts from Syracuse University. For over 25 years, she taught art to K-8 students on MDI and led creative, exploratory women’s workshops in her own studio. Now retired, she has a full-time studio practice that includes painting, drawing, collage, altered books, reflective journaling, and creative writing using the Exquisite Corpse process. Carol considers herself an artist of ideas. “I’m always most excited and happiest when I’m exploring new concepts and materials.”
