The Women’s Health Resource Library will be holding a Diaper-A-Thon at the Bayside Shop ‘n Save in Milbridge on Friday November 3 from 12-6 PM.
Customers will be able to purchase packages of diapers to donate to local babies. Some of the diapers will be going to Family Futures Downeast, a project designed to provide young families with a positive college experience while reducing barriers to accessing that experience. Parents are provided with quality childcare while they are taking classes. FFD has requested diapers to have on hand for families participating in the program.
Diaper donations will also be going to the Maine Seacoast Mission Food Pantry to provide for local families in need.
According to the National Diaper Bank Network, one in three American families report experiencing “diaper need”, which is defined as a lack of sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry, and healthy. Diapers cannot be obtained with food stamps. It is estimated that the cost to keep a baby in diapers for one month is between $70 and $80.
Most childcare centers, even free and subsidized facilities require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers. Cloth diapers are not accepted at the vast majority of child care centers. Many parents cannot go to work or school if they cannot leave their babies at child care.
