Volunteer

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

– Helen Keller

The WHRL has a small staff and much of what we accomplish is by the grace of volunteers. We hope that there is something on this list that inspires you!

Gardening – Volunteers Needed!
Our largest program, Incredible Edible Milbridge, has many volunteer opportunities if you enjoy being outdoors – planting at the beginning of the season, weeding, watering, and general garden maintenance throughout the season – and cleanup at the end of the season. Volunteer days at the Market Garden at the Red Barn will be on Tuesdays from 2:00 – 5:00, starting May 8 and on Saturday mornings from 9:30 – 11:30, starting May 26.

Consider adopting one of the IEM raised beds in town. Help plant and maintain the bed throughout the season.

Cooking – Cooks Needed!
WHRL staffs the IEM Veggie Cart at the Milbridge Farmers’ Market on Saturdays during the season. We like to have a vegetable dish for folks to test. This year we’re producing an IEM veggie cookbook. We’re seeking volunteers who are willing to make a dish from the cookbook to bring to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday for taste testing.

5K Events – Organizers and Worker Bees Needed!
WHRL sponsors two 5K events during the year. On May 5 we have the Elaine Hill “Love a Nurse” 5K. This annual event raises funds for the Elaine Hill Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The second event is on the Saturday of Milbridge Days. These events require an event organizer, the recruitment of 5K sponsors, and volunteers on the day of the race.

WHRL Milbridge Days Auction – Committee Members Needed!
Our largest fundraiser of the year is the WHRL Milbridge Days Auction. This event is a combined raffle style auction and silent auction. We seek at least a hundred items for the raffle auction. The silent auction is for benches that local artisan paint. Volunteers are needed to be part of our auction committee to help solicit items for our auction. We also need volunteers to help set up and prepare for the auction itself.

WHRL Christmas Tree Festival & Auction – Decorators Needed!
Our second largest fundraising event is held during Christmas on Main Street – the first Saturday in December. Community members adopt and decorate a live table-top sized Christmas tree or a Christmas wreath. These items are then auctioned.

Mailing Days – Busy Hands Needed!
Twice a year we have mailing parties where we stuff and mail our twice-yearly newsletter. We are always looking for help on these days.

Workshops – Leaders Needed!
WHRL hosts a variety of workshop each year. Some are focused on gardening and food production. Others are on health and wellness topics or art workshops. If you have an interest/skill and are interested in volunteering time to lead a workshop, we’d love to hear from you!
